Management

Avoid avalanche terrain completely or make careful route choices during and after heavy snowfall until the newly fallen snow has stabilized, usually one to a few days.

Description

-Softer flakes of fresh snow that bind together on top of weaker layers.

-Can be difficult to detect but sometimes cracks can be seen on the snow surface.

-The size of the avalanches varies from small to very large.

-Performs more often on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

-Can occur in all terrain, but avalanches on bare mountains are more common and get bigger.

-The problem stabilizes relatively quickly after snowfall, usually within 24 to 36 hours.

-Cold air temperatures can delay stabilization.
